5 things to do in Vancouver today: Thursday, October 1

October has arrived, and with it, the countdown to Halloween 2015! The best day of the year, if you don’t count like a whole ton of other days. But whatever! Get psyched, because there’s a bunch of non-Halloween related things going on tonight, and they’re all ready for you.

Orquesta Buena Vista Social Club

  • What: The farewell tour of the legendary Cuban group. These people are living music legends, and you’re going to kick yourself in the butt for decades if you miss them. Well, if you’re in to Cuban music. If you aren’t, you’re probably cool with it.
  • Where: The Chan Centre for the Performing Arts – 6265 Crescent Road, Vancouver
  • When: Thursday, October 1; 8 p.m.

4OUR presented by Joe Ink

  • What: This modern dance ensemble explores the emotional connection between movement, memory, and the past. Presented by Joe Ink and choreographer Joe Laughlin, this world premiere will have you tearing up with joy, longing, and heartbreak all in the same night.
  • Where: Scotiabank Dance Centre – 677 Davie Street, Vancouver
  • When: Thursday, October 1; 8 p.m.

National Seniors Day at the Vancouver Public Library

  • What: In recognition of Seniors Day, this event will feature a candidates debate on Seniors issues, a tour of the VPL Inspiration Labs, demonstrations of health related apps, websites, and programs, and a sing-a-long to finish it all off. What a lovely day.

Deep Time

  • What: Presented as part of the Vancouver International Film Festival, Deep Time explores how the oil boom in North Dakota has affected Indigenous communities through out the region. This is a pretty early showing, but a very compelling film, so get on it.
  • Where: SFU Goldcorp Centre for the Arts – 149 West Hastings Street, Vancouver

Darryl Lenox at Yuk Yuk’s

  • What: Lenox is one of the hottest comedians working today. He’s appeared Conan, Comedy Central, The WTF Podcast with Marc Maron, and more shows than I could count on a hundred hands. If you’re a comedy fan, you don’t want to miss him.
