5 Seconds of Summer heats up Rogers Arena (PHOTOS)

5 Seconds of Summer, the biggest thing to emerge from Australia since the Bloomin’ Onion, rocked a packed Rogers Arena on Saturday night.

The band of boys (apparently they HATE being referred to as a “boyband”) said “g’day!” to thousands of screaming girls and some slightly embarrassed-looking dads, all of whom shelled out big bucks to see the guys on their Rock Out With Your Socks Out tour. 5SOS’s Vancouver show was the hottest ticket in town last night, with some floor seats going for double their face value on resale sites.

The group has released just one studio album but cultivated a huge following after opening for that other famous foursome, One Direction, on past tours. 5SOS performed hits like “Amnesia” and “She Looks So Perfect” last night, in addition to covers of songs by the Romantics and Green Day (the boys are big fans of 90’s alternative bands, as lead singer Luke Hemmings sported a Weezer t-shirt while bandmate Michael Clifford rocked a Metallica one).

This summer has literally been a scorcher for guitarist Clifford – he was injured at a concert in June when he stepped too close to a pyrotechnic display and singed his face and hair. Vancouver fans breathed a sigh of relief when he appeared onstage completely unharmed from the incident – he looks just as good in person as he does on the pages of Tiger Beat magazine.

The boys took a moment to thank the Vancouver crowd for welcoming the foursome with open arms. “To all of our fans from last week, and all of our fans from four years ago. You guys are awesome,” Hemmings said to huge cheers.
