45% of transit plebiscite ballots returned with 2 days remaining in voting period

Transit plebiscite ballot return rates have increased marginally since last week’s report of the ballot numbers.

According to Elections B.C.’s final update before the voting deadline on Friday evening, 44.7 per cent or 698,900 ballots have been returned.

Ballots must arrive at the elections office by no later than 8 p.m. on May 29 – the latest voters were able to submit their completed ballot by mail was Tuesday before the mailbox’s pick-up time. Ballots received after the cutoff time will not be counted.

This also means ballots can only be submitted to Elections B.C. by in-person drop-off at one of nine plebiscite offices located at the region’s shopping centres.

Over 1.56 million residents across the region’s 23 municipal jurisdictions are registered to vote in the plebiscite. The deadline to register to vote and receive a ballot was May 15.

The results of the plebiscite will be released several weeks after the voting deadline.
