40,000 customers affected by power outage across South Coast
High winds this afternoon have caused a power outage across much of the Lower Mainland and in other areas of the South Coast.
According to B.C. Hydro, there are currently 40,000 customers without power, with 54 outages reported in the Lower Mainland and Sunshine Coast. Within the Lower Mainland, most of the sizeable outages are located in the eastern municipalities of Metro Vancouver – in Surrey, Langley, Maple Ridge, Pitt Meadows, Port Coquitlam, Coquitlam, and White Rock.

The series of outages have exponentially grown since mid-afternoon.
In Surrey alone, 14,000 customers are without power, but there are only small isolated outages at this time in Vancouver, Burnaby, and Richmond.
There is no estimated time for when power will be fully restored to affected customers.
Earlier in the day, Environment Canada issued a rain and wind warning of up to 70 mm of rain for Howe Sound and near the North Shore mountains and 50 to 70 km/hr wind gusts from the southeast.
- UPDATE: As of 7:45 p.m., there are now approximately 20,000 affected customers.
