At least three new outdoor pools could be making a splash in Vancouver, after the Parks Board voted to look into options for innovative new swimming spots in the city.
Park Board Commissioner John Coupar, who proposed the idea, told Vancity Buzz Vancouver has dramatically fewer outdoor pools than other cities, and it’s time to fix that.
“People are passionate about this. There’s something special about swimming outside in the sunshine,” said Coupar. “It’s a real community connection for people…and there’s a strong desire to get this going.”
Vancouver has three outdoor pools you can swim laps in – Kitsilano, Second Beach and New Brighton; two other shallow outdoor pools are located at Hillcrest and Maple Grove.
Coupar said the new pools could be located in East or South Vancouver, and may be modelled after “natural” pools that are becoming popular around the world.
“The great thing about natural outdoor pools is that they use a biofilter and not chlorine, and they’re able to create a natural pool environment, which I think would be terrific here in Vancouver.”
