Surrey RCMP have arrested a 23-year-old woman for neglecting her two-year-old child.

On June 16, police received a complaint after the child had been brought into a local area hospital and was deemed to be starving to death. Investigators followed up to the complaint and immediately became engaged with an intensive investigation which led to the mother’s arrest on August 29.

The mother is now facing charges of failure to provide the necessaries of life and criminal negligence causing bodily harm.

Normally, in cases like this, the RCMP would refer to the Ministry of Children and Family Development to ensure the child is safe and cared for.

RCMP have stated that the child’s condition has since improved. A publication ban is in effect on the suspect’s name.

The Surrey RCMP’s Special Victims Unit is continuing their investigation. Anyone with more information is asked to contact the Surrey RCMP Special Victims Unit at 604-599-0502 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS if you wish to remain anonymous. Please reference file number 2014-83639 when contacting police.
