21 locations in Vancouver where 'Fifty Shades of Grey' was filmed
Fifty Shades of Grey blew away its competition in the box office over the Valentine’s Day weekend, raking in over $266-million worldwide during its first four days in theatres.
This includes a tally of $85-million from 3,646 theatres in North America, which is the largest release ever for an R/18A-rated movie, to set a new record for the biggest Valentine’s Day and President’s Day weekend gross. Given its strong opening weekend performance, the film is now expected to top at least $500-million worldwide.

The 125-minute erotic romance drama film was directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson and filmed in and around Vancouver from December 1, 2013 to February 21,2014, with reshoots taking place in mid-October 2014. It is set in Seattle and Portland and stars Jamie Dornan as BDSM-loving billionaire Christian Grey and Dakota Johnson as English literature university student Anastasia Steele.
Given that the movie is such a major box office success and was produced with a relatively slim $40-million budget, film adaptations will also be made for the remaining two novels in E.L. James’ bestselling trilogy, Fifty Shades Darker and Fifty Shades Freed. Dornan and Johnson will reprise their roles, but director Taylor-Johnson is not expected to return to the sequel due to creative differences with the book’s author.
Production on the sequel will return to Vancouver and is expected to begin in June 2015 for a 2016 release.
