2013 has been another busy year in Vancouver for real estate and transportation infrastructure projects.
Real estate projects like Bjarke Ingels’ 52-storey tower, the new urban casino resort at BC Place, and the revival of Arthur Erickson’s 1133 West Georgia project as the Trump International Hotel & Tower Vancouver have set a new standard for architectural excellence in the city. These projects go far beyond the traditional bland and ‘cookie cutter’ designs that dominate the Vancouver skyline.
The redevelopment of Oakridge Centre will also bring more shopping opportunities to Vancouver’s neighbourhoods and a new kind of dense, urban public realm previously unseen outside of downtown.
The debate over the sustainability of the region’s unaffordable housing prices and ongoing condo boom rages on, however, the region’s very economic and environmental vitality depends entirely on urban change and growth based on densification around major transportation nodes.
Vancouverites should be thankful that we’re not the city of Detroit.
