20 date ideas under $20 in Vancouver

DH Vancouver Staff Nov 29, 2013 7:49 am

Let’s come to the sad realization that this is in fact Vancouver and we aren’t all rich. Now let’s move past that depressing point and focus on date possibilities in your price range. Now, of course, you don’t tell him/her that you’ve based your date off a list of 20 dates under $20, you simply impress while budgeting.

1. Robson Square Ice Rink

Talk about romantic. Skating at Robson Square is not only affordable but one of Vancouver’s best winter trademarks. Take your date for a skate under the stars anytime from now until the end of February 2014. Bring your own skates or rent for just $4 and don’t forget a helmet!

Sunday – Thursday, 9 a.m. – 9 p.m.
Friday and Saturday, 9 a.m. – 11 p.m.

2. Vancouver Art Gallery on a Tuesday evening

The Vancouver Art Gallery offers admission by donation on Tuesdays after 5 p.m. This is a great option for those who enjoy and appreciate art. With ever changing exhibits year round, there is no shortage of variety and culture to explore.

3. A walk and a coffee

Vancouver offers endless beautiful outdoor options. Sure it’s cold, but bundle up and grab a coffee. Situated on every corner, you won’t have an issue finding a coffee shop. The most you’ll spend is $15 depending on how fancy you like your beverage of choice.

4. Dessert instead of dinner

Skip dinner and move onto dessert. Those who love dessert know that Vancouver offers up some delectable options.

5. Seek out local live music

Believe it or not, you can find local artists playing for under $20. You may need to put a little work in searching, but you will find venues offering cheap ticket rates for entry.

6. Check out the driving range

This is one of those perfect date options. Not only is it cheap, but there is an opportunity to teach your date how to golf if they lack skill.

7. Scope out daily drink specials

Drinks are often expensive but when seeking out daily specials you’ll see that drinking on a budget is possible. Most bars and pubs in our city offer a daily drink special – check websites or drop in to your fave bar for details.

8. Go for a hike

This cheap date idea may not be for everyone, but Vancouver has a wide range of hikes at no cost.

9. Check out free festivals and events around town

This may not be as easy during the winter months, but, once summer rolls around, take your date to a free festival and during the Christmas season there’s quite a few events on the cheap in our Christmas in Vancouver guide.

10. Rent a movie

Simple yet the perfect date idea – a movie and popcorn at home.

11. Sushi

Sure you can easily spend $20 on sushi all by your lonesome, but you’d be surprised at some of the cheap lunch deals around this city. You can easily eat for two under $20.

12. Go for a bike ride or roller blade

With all of the bike lanes and beautiful outdoor options, a bike ride is a simple and free option.

13. Granville Island Window Shopping

Granville Island offers cheap food options, beautiful scenery and window shopping galore.

14. Watch the sunset

You’re allowed to be romantic once in a while. Grab a blanket, dress in something warm and head out to your favorite view point.

15. Have a massage night

Now, I don’t suggest this on a first date but if you’re in a relationship, a massage night can be a great cheap date option. Go buy a bottle of wine, light some candles and enjoy each other’s massage skills or lack thereof.

16. Go sledding

Winter is around the corner – why not express your inner kid and enjoy the snow?

17. Go bowling

Looking for something fun and cheap? Try out bowling!

18. Go food cart hopping

The thought makes me drool – if this city is good at one thing, it’s offering some delish food cart options.

19. Make homemade pizza

Go to your local grocer and pick up some pizza dough and toppings. Not only is this a cheap option, but it can be healthy and fun to do as a couple.

20. Go gelato tasting

Okay, it is cold out but I can’t be the only one who likes annoying the gelato shop employees by sampling every flavor. Here are the best Ice Cream shops in Vancouver.
