2 men killed during police standoff in Burnaby

Dec 20 2017, 1:29 am

Friday morning’s reported shooting in the Burnaby neighbourhood of Esmond and Frances Street has ended in the death of two men, one shot by police.

Just before 7 a.m. this morning, Burnaby RCMP reported to a residence at the 3800 block of Frances Street where shots were heard. One man appeared to be shot and the gunman was still on the scene. The block was immediately cordoned off from the public and neighbours were told to stay inside their homes.

Police determined a suspect was inside one of the homes and attempted to negotiate with that person, however police were required to enter the home where subsequent shots were fired.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene and an upstairs tenant in the house was safely evacuated. The first shooting victim also died.

The Independent Investigations Office of BC and Integrated Homicide Investigation Team are now investigating the incident. Anyone who may have witnessed the incident is asked to contact the IIO Toll-free Witness Line at 1-855-446-8477 (TIPS).
