16th Annual Wreck Beach Butoh Dance 2011

Dec 19 2017, 5:00 am

Kokoro Dance is proud to present the 16th installment of Wreck Beach Butoh, an annual butoh dance performance on the shores of Wreck Beach at the foot of the #4 Trail (below the UBC Museum of Anthropology). Kokoro Dance performers, clad only in full body white makeup, will explore Canada’s most famous clothing-optional beach at low tide, 12:30 PM on Saturday, July 2, and at 1:00 PM on Sunday, July 3. Performances take place, rain or shine and admission is free (suggested donation of $5).

Wreck Beach Butoh was first performed in 1996. A new version is annually created by Kokoro Dance directors Barbara Bourget and Jay Hirabayashi. Freed from the confines of traditional venues, Wreck Beach Butoh reinvigorates and inspires Kokoro Dance and its audiences in this raw encounter with the earth, sea, and sky. Each year, the weather and tide provide variants so that no two performances are ever the same. Kokoro Dance provides the choreography, and Mother Nature provides the stage, lighting, soundscape, and costumes.

Founded in 1986, Kokoro Dance is Vancouver’s most visibly recognizable dance company through its many site-specific performances. Look for the company at the City of Vancouver’s upcoming Summer Live! Performances in Stanley Park July 8 – 10. Kokoro Dance has produced over 1,000 performances across Canada and internationally and is dedicated to multi-disciplinary collaboration and cross-cultural exploration. Each March, Kokoro Dance presents the Vancouver International Dance Festival (www.vidf.ca) an event which features local, national and international dance artists in performances, master classes and workshops.
