Surrey RCMP are investigating a shooting incident that occurred on Monday evening near Maple Green Elementary School.

Gun shots were heard within the vicinity of Spencer Drive and 148th Street in Surrey at approximately 6:30 p.m. When police arrived at the scene, they found evidence of a shooting incident – shell casings were located near the site of where a group of young males were reportedly seen leaving the area in a vehicle.

Meanwhile, police also received reports from Surrey Memorial Hospital – about four kilometres away – that a 16-year-old male teenager drove to the emergency room with a gunshot wound to his right buttock. The injury was not severe and he is expected to make a full recovery.

While the victim claims the wound was self-inflicted, police believe the incident was related to the shooting earlier in the evening.

The teenager is not known to police and the shooting is not believed to be random. At this time, police do not have any details about the suspects or the vehicle they were traveling in.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Surrey RCMP’s Serious Crime Unit at 604-599-0502 or anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
