Fireworks lit up Burrard Inlet on the 4th of July for a private group to celebrate American Independence Day.

The seven-minute-long display began at approximately 10 p.m. and was launched from a barge west of Stanley Park’s Third Beach and south of West Vancouver’s Ambleside Beach Park.

The private group has received the necessary municipal government permits and approvals to put on a safe private fireworks display. There was no fire risk as the show took place over water, similar to Canada Day and the Celebration of Light.

This coincides with Vancouver’s current heavy American presence with the FIFA Women’s World Cup Championship Final scheduled for today at B.C. Place Stadium. Tens of thousands of American visitors have arrived in the city to attend the much-anticipated match between the United States and Japan.

Fireworks also exploded over Coal Harbour on last year’s July 4. There was speculation that the 2014 display was organized by the NFL Seattle Seahawks who were visiting the city and celebrating their SuperBowl win.

Residents are reminded that for safety purposes, permits are required to host private fireworks displays.

Due to extreme heat and tinder dry conditions, there is a general campfire, fireworks and open burning ban across the province. The fire danger rating within the City of Vancouver, including Stanley Park, was also recently upgraded to ‘extreme’.
