A new development application seeks to squeeze in more retail space into downtown Vancouver’s block-long luxury retail strip on Alberni Street.

Local architectural firm Musson Cattell Mackey Partnership has outlined a proposal to renovate and expand the ground level of the office tower at 1090 West Georgia Street — the northeast corner of the intersection of Thurlow Street and Alberni Street — with additional and updated retail space.

Retail tenants on the main floor currently consist of Blenz Coffee and Escada.

The interior and exterior of the main floor and mezzanine level will be rejigged to create 2,059 sq. ft. of additional retail space.

This storefront expansion will be accomplished by replacing some of the property landscaping on the Alberni Street side.

Additionally, there will be new ground-level glass canopies along the building’s sides with West Georgia Street, Thurlow Street, and Alberni Street.

1090 West Georgia Street is a 16-storey building with 145,000 sq. ft. of office space within the upper levels.
