$1 a day for transit in Vancouver? Another idea from a would-be mayor

As the Vancouver mayoral election draws nearer, more and more catchy ideas are being touted by candidates. From the same person who is keen on taxing homeowners who leave their properties empty comes a dollar-a-day transit pass proposal for all Vancouver’s adults.

COPE party candidate Meena Wong put forth her transit solution Wednesday, explaining that the ‘V-pass’ would be a three-zone pass for unlimited travel on TransLink for “working age” adults in Vancouver, and would cost passengers a mere $30 a month. This particular proposal is not part of the party’s published campaign transit platform.

Wong posits that the program would generate $160 million for TransLink, which exceeds the $150 million they currently receive from Vancouverites. The candidate adds that people can opt-out of the program.

Wong admits that TransLink has heard her pitch, and they aren’t exactly on board.
