22-year-old charged with attempted murder after allegedly assaulting officer with baton

A 22-year-old man has been charged with attempted murder after he allegedly assaulted a police officer with his own baton in a Richmond Hill mall parking lot.

According to police, on Friday, March 27, at 3:40 pm, York Regional Police Communications received a radio call from an officer requiring assistance in the parking lot of Hillcrest Mall, at 9350 Yonge Street.

Police say when officers arrived they found that a York Regional Police Constable was suffering from serious injuries. The four-year veteran officer was rushed to hospital, where he remains, for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

Officers also located the suspect at the scene. He wasn’t injured and was placed under arrest.

According to investigators, the police officer was parked in the mall parking lot, near the Marshalls store, when he was approached by the suspect.

“The suspect assaulted the officer who was seated inside of his cruiser. The altercation continued outside of the car where the suspect took possession of the officer’s baton and continued the assault,” said police.

Chidubem Anthony Okeke was arrested and charged with attempted murder and failure to comply with recognizance.

Investigators are looking for any video surveillance from the area that may have captured the incident or anyone that may have captured dashcam video of the suspect prior to the incident.

Police say the investigation is ongoing.
