World Juniors trouble? Canada just got blown out by U.S. at summer showcase
Is Team Canada careening toward a disastrous World Junior tournament later this year?
The tournament will return to Alberta in December with games set to go in Red Deer and Edmonton, but preparations have hit a bit of a snag. The program is currently undergoing its annual summer showcase with prospective players being invited to camp to show why they should be considered.
Part of the summer showcase includes games against other countries, and things went awry in Canada’s matchup against the United States on Saturday. What was expected to be a competitive game wound up being a complete blowout, as Canada dropped an embarrassing 7-2 decision to their arch-rivals.
That is despite outshooting the U.S. by a 36-24 margin.

The two teams played to a respectable 0-0 tie after the first 20 minutes, but the United States found a way to break through in the second period, netting five goals behind Canadian netminder and Ottawa Senators draft pick Lucas Beckman.
It was a dismal end to a so-so summer showcase for the Canadians. Prior to this loss, the team opened the mini-tournament with a 5-3 loss to Sweden, but managed to knock off Finland in their second game with a 5-3 victory of their own.
Canada is looking to return to their gold medal ways at the World Juniors for the first time since 2023. In the time since that last gold medal, the Canadians have only managed to reach the podium once, with a third-place finish at last year’s tournament.
It wasn’t just the World Junior squad who had a tough Saturday, as Canada’s U18 squad also suffered a tough pre-tournament loss at the Hlinka Gretzky Cup, dropping a 6-0 decision to Czechia.

Luckily, Canada’s World Junior team will have some time to learn from the loss. The tournament is set to open up on Boxing Day, and the final roster for that team will be set shortly before then.
The hope is that the powers that be will learn from this loss enough to make sure it doesn’t carry over when the World Juniors tournament officially arrives.
