WhatsApp to require users to share personal data with Facebook

WhatsApp users will have to agree to share their personal data with Facebook if they want to continue using the messaging app after next month.

The app notified users this week that its privacy policy would be updated, and that users would have to “agree” to share information, including their phone number and location, with Facebook.

If users don’t agree to the new terms by February 8, 2021, they will lose access to their accounts.

“By tapping Agree, you accept the new terms and privacy policy, which take effect on February 8, 2021,” the notification reads. “After this date, you’ll need to accept these updates to continue using WhatsApp.”

According to WhatsApp’s privacy policy, other information that will be shared with Facebook include the user’s browser information, language, time zone, IP address, and mobile network.

Connection information, such as your mobile operator or internet service provider, will also be shared, as will a phone’s battery level and signal strength.

For WhatsApp users in Canada and the United States, the app’s Terms of Service contain a “binding arbitration provision.”

By using the app and agreeing to its terms, users agree to resolve any disputes it may have with the app, “including those relating to, arising out of, or in any way in connection with your rights of privacy and publicity” without a judge or jury.
