The University of Toronto placed first in Canada in terms of academic reputation in a new set of rankings released Wednesday.

Times Higher Education pegged U of T as number one in Canada and 20th in the world in its 2020 World Reputation Rankings. That’s a slight slip from 2019, when U of T placed 19th.

The annual survey invites senior, published academics to name 15 universities they believe are the best for research and teaching in certain fields.

“The latest ranking from Times Higher Education confirms that the University of Toronto’s researchers and scholars are held in very high esteem by their peers around the world,” U of T president Meric Gertler said in a news release.

The top three universities with the best reputations worldwide were Harvard, MIT, and Stanford (in that order). The only other Canadian universities to make the top 50 were the University of British Columbia, which ranked 38th, and McGill, which placed 40th.
