A record-breaking patio season

Summer 2026 is coming in hot, bringing along with it a mass of events and people. While the FIFA 2026 World Cup is set to have Toronto abuzz, with hundreds of thousands of visitors expected, the warmer months have always been a booming time for Toronto patios.

” Outdoor dining can account for up to half of a restaurant’s total sales in peak months. The restaurants that will come out ahead are the ones investing in the right tools, the right staff, and the right setup before the rush hits,” says TouchBistro CEO Samir Zabaneh.

Given the city’s love for al fresco dining, patios are a defining part of Toronto’s dining culture, from the first warm day of the season to the very last. Just look at the robust CafeTO program, where hundreds of restaurants across the city are opening expanded patios, sidewalk cafes, and curb lane dining with municipal support.

Tie that in with the standard stacked lineup of Toronto events (we’re talking Caribana, the CNE, and Pride), and boom! Demand for patios has just heavily increased. It’s no wonder that more than 80% of full-service restaurant operators now offer patio or outdoor dining. According to TouchBistro, outdoor dining operations can account for 25 to 49 per cent of total sales — proving that a good patio season is incredibly crucial.

Take it from Bellwoods Brewery’s Director of Hospitality, Laska Ryan, who says patio season is something the restaurant builds their whole year around. “This summer feels especially exciting. The city is buzzing in a way we haven’t seen in a while, and we’re making sure we’re ready for it. Getting the operations locked in early is everything; when you’re slammed on a Saturday afternoon, you’re really glad you put in the prep work.”

For beloved Toronto bar (and patio) Pennies, General Manager Katie Vaughan says their two locations are gearing up for a busy season that has been extensively planned.

“This year is going to be especially wild with the World Cup energy in the city. In Little Italy, we’ll be showing games outside on the patio, which we’re really excited about. And at our Trinity Bellwoods location, being so close to the action, we’re expecting to be busy. Hopefully, a lot of good-vibe-newcomers and very happy regulars this summer,” she says.

With an incredible and unique opportunity to welcome and serve happy customers, restaurants and bars that prepare beforehand are in the best position to be profitable. TouchBistro says that preparation is crucial for success, which can cover features like staffing, guest experience, and the physical setup as well.

Whether that looks like reliable patio umbrellas, fans, and heaters, or patio-ready tech like a mobile point-of-sale (POS) system, having all the bases covered means a restaurant can handle anything thrown its way.

Looking ahead, nearly 40% of operators plan to add private events this season, a smart revenue play, especially with FIFA World Cup watch parties and summer holidays creating natural booking moments. For restaurants thinking about how to make the most of the season, TouchBistro’s data points to a clear formula: prepare the physical space, build a patio-ready team, lean into technology, and create experiences that keep guests coming back.
