Mother Nature is starting off the new year on the freezing side.

Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for the City of Toronto, where freezing rain is possible late this evening and overnight.

According to the weather agency, precipitation is expected to start as snow or ice pellets late this afternoon in areas north of Lake Ontario.

Environment Canada says the freezing rain “may be mixed with rain or snow” throughout the evening and possibly night on Friday and “some ice accretion” is possible. The precipitation is expected to transition to snow by early Saturday morning.

“This precipitation is associated with a low-pressure system moving north from Texas which will track near the south shore of Lake Erie tonight,” reads the statement.

The alert, issued just after 10 am on Friday, is in effect for the entire City of Toronto.
