Another trade: Toronto Raptors deal Davion Mitchell on deadline day

The Toronto Raptors management group has been busy ahead of the NBA’s trade deadline.
This morning, they announced another deal, as they are trading point guard Davion Mitchell to the Miami Heat in exchange for PJ Tucker, a second-round pick, and cash.

Mitchell was in his first season with the Raptors. The 24-year-old was acquired along with Aleksandar Vezenkov, the draft rights to Jamal Shead, and a 2025 second-round pick from the Sacramento Kings in exchange for small forward Jalen McDaniels. Mitchell, known for his strong defending, was averaging 24.5 minutes along with 6.3 points and 4.6 assists through 44 games with the Raptors.
Tucker is a familiar name to Raptors fans. He was drafted in the second round by the Raptors in 2006 and spent time with them during the 2006-07 season. He also returned for a brief period during the 2016-17 season, appearing in 24 games where he averaged 5.8 points along with 5.4 rebounds.
That said, he may not play any games with the organization this time around, as TSN’s Josh Lewenberg notes that the Raptors will likely buy out his contract.
PJ Tucker, a 3-time Raptor! (Would imagine they buy him out)
Makes sense. Raps get a 2nd-rounder for helping Miami shed some salary. Mitchell is a pending RFA and has fallen out of the rotation with Shead’s emergence. Great defender but wasn’t part of the long-term plan. https://t.co/QZa2YhHe6Y

As Lewenberg mentions, this move is still a wise one from Masai Ujiri and his staff, as it gives this rebuilding group another draft pick in exchange for Mitchell, a pending RFA, who was no longer a part of the organization’s long-term plans.
This move comes roughly 12 hours after an even bigger trade involving the Raptors, who last night acquired former All-Star Brandon Ingram from the New Orleans Pelicans. Going the other way in that trade was Bruce Brown Jr., Kelly Olynyk, a first-round pick, and a second-round pick.
The NBA trade deadline is scheduled for 3 pm ET/noon PT.
