The Toronto Raptors could be moving on from one of their most popular players.

According to NBA insider Jake Fischer via a recent Bleacher Report livestream, the Raptors have been considering shipping RJ Barrett out in a trade.

“RJ Barrett is certainly a name that I would tell you and tell Raptors fans to be on the lookout as a potential trade candidate going out the door… he was someone that the Raptors discussed with the Pelicans in that Brandon Ingram trade conversation,” Fischer said. “Barrett’s representation is fully aware that he could be discussed in trade moving forward for the Raptors.”

Barrett has two years left on a $107-million contract originally signed with the New York Knicks.

How has Barrett performed for the Raptors?

Barrett was originally acquired in December 2023 by Toronto in a trade with the Knicks, centred around OG Anunoby.

Barrett has averaged 21.3 points, 6.3 rebounds and 4.9 assists in 90 games since coming to Toronto, compared to 18.1 points, 5.3 rebounds and 2.8 assists in 297 games for the Knicks in his parts of five seasons in New York.

While the Raptors haven’t exactly been competitive in Barrett’s time in Toronto, the 25-year-old Canadian seems to enjoy every moment in his hometown.

“It’s just such a blessing to be here. It means a lot more for me to put on this jersey every day, as well as just being back home. I’ve lived in the States for like, nine to 10 years, to be back in Canada now, I get to live in my hometown,” Barrett said in an interview with Offside earlier this year. “It’s been amazing.”
