Toronto Maple Leafs get awful injury news after Stolarz' MRI

The Toronto Maple Leafs didn’t exactly get the kind of news they wanted to hear when it came to Anthony Stolarz.

According to The Hockey News’ David Alter, Stolarz is expected to miss 4-6 weeks after additional issues were discovered with his knee. As relayed by Leafs general manager Brad Treliving, the issue was discovered when a “pebble” was located via an MRI.

The news is a departure from the first reports of the injury that happened last week in a game against the Anaheim Ducks, where Stolarz left after the second period in an eventual 3-2 win.

“It is concerning for sure. I didn’t see when it happened in the game or anything, but hopefully, we get good news out of it,” Toronto coach Craig Berube said on Thursday night. “It was in between periods. He got checked out and couldn’t go.”

As of Friday, Berube had expected Stolarz to be day-to-day, as the team got “good news overall” on his injury, though no further specifics were given.

In his first year in Toronto after signing from the Florida Panthers, Stolarz has gone 9-5-2 in 17 games with a goals-against average of 2.15 and a save percentage of .927.

Joseph Woll will be Toronto’s de facto starter as Stolarz recovers.

Meanwhile, Dennis Hildeby picked up his second win of the season on Sunday, standing strong for a 5-3 victory over the Buffalo Sabres after falling behind 3-1.

“He settled down after the first two. I thought he made a couple of key saves in the third period. He handled the puck well,” Berube said.

While many industries might be slowing down this week, it’s a pretty packed schedule for the Leafs before the Christmas break. Toronto returns to action Wednesday night in Dallas as they take on the Stars on the road. Puck drop for that one is set for 7:30 pm.
