The Toronto Maple Leafs have officially made their first move of trade deadline day.

Per the Fourth Period’s David Pagnotta, the Leafs have acquired 30-year-old centre Scott Laughton from the Philadelphia Flyers.

He is in the fourth year of a five-year contract worth US$3 million per season.

As per The Athletic’s Chris Johnston, the Flyers will be retaining half of Laughton’s contract, while the Leafs will be sending Nikita Grebenkin to Philadelphia as well as a first-round pick, a fourth-round pick, and sixth-round pick.

TSN’s Pierre LeBrun added that the first-round pick is for 2027, and it is top-10 protected, meaning it’d slide another year in Toronto ended up drafting within the top-10.

Laughton has 11 goals and 16 assists for a total of 27 points in 60 games for the Flyers this season. A former 20th overall pick in 2012 by Philadelphia, Laughton has spent his entire NHL career there. He has played 661 games for the team, putting up 106 goals and 159 assists for a career mark of 265 points since making his NHL debut in the 2012-13 season.

“It’s pretty surreal, finding out about 10 minutes ago,” Laughton told TSN on a phone call after the deal. “Excited for the playoffs; it’s been a little bit here in Philly… I’m very grateful for my time in Philly, to spend that much time in one organization. I’m excited for the opportunity and ready to go.”

Laughton is originally from Oakville, Ontario, and played his minor hockey for the GTHL’s Toronto Marlboros organization alongside former Leafs forward Connor Brown.

“Being a Leafs fan growing up, it’s really cool and really special,” he added.

There is no word yet on when he might make his Leafs debut, with Toronto set to play in Denver against the Colorado Avalanche on Saturday night.
