The Toronto Maple Leafs are cutting ties with a recent draft pick.
As reported by Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman, the Leafs are placing Ty Voit on waivers for the purpose of contract termination.
The Hockey News’ David Alter reported that it was “an amicable parting of ways,” as Voit didn’t quite have the smoothest time in the Toronto organization since being picked by the franchise in the fifth round of the 2021 NHL Draft.
How did Voit’s time with the Leafs go?
Voit had managed just one AHL game during his time in the pros, spending 68 games in the ECHL split between Toronto affiliates in Newfoundland and Cincinnati. In his first game with the Toronto Marlies in December 2023, Voit suffered his second shoulder injury of the season that ultimately cut his first pro campaign short.
“I just kind of want to get back in the mix and kind of just show what I was supposed to show [in the 2023-24 season],” Voit had told reporters during Leafs training camp last fall. “I was sadly held out with a shoulder injury, so I’ve had a while to go without some hockey here.”
Voit managed eight goals and 29 assists in 63 games with Cincinnati last year.
He entered the franchise in one of the strangest drafts in league history, with many of the prospects not playing any competitive hockey leading up to it due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Of the three picks Toronto had in that year, only Matthew Knies has made it to the NHL, with Leafs sixth-round selection Vyacheslav Peksa splitting his time between the ECHL and AHL this past season.
