Mayor Tory declares Easter Bunny and Tooth Fairy essential workers

With Easter just around the corner, children can rest easy.

Because Mayor John Tory just decided to declare the Easter Bunny an essential worker.

On Tuesday, the mayor wrote a tweet declaring that the Easter Bunny and Tooth Fairy are both essential workers — following in the footsteps of New Zealand’s Prime Minister, Jacinda Ardern, who declared both essential workers on April 6.

“Asked about declaring Easter Bunny & Tooth Fairy essential as NZ did. Confirmed of course the Easter Bunny & Tooth Fairy are essential workers in Toronto. Asked @fordnation to make sure they are essential provincewide as well. Thanks to everyone planning to #StayHome for Easter.”

While the effort is made to lift spirits for young ones during the holiday, it is also a message from the mayor for residents to stay home, even during times of celebration and family togetherness.

During a press conference on Monday, Tory urged urged residents who observe Easter and Passover to avoid gatherings and to “stay home and stay safe” during the crisis.

“An Easter egg hunt is not worth your life,” he said.

With the holidays coming up, it can cause overcrowding in grocery stores, which is what the mayor is strongly discouraging to ensure physical distancing measures.

For now, families can still enjoy the holidays in the comfort and safety of their own home. And who knows, maybe an Easter Bunny or Tooth Fairy might join the festivities… while practicing safe distancing, of course.
