Fans attentively watching the Toronto Blue Jays this season may notice an interesting-looking bat from a few different players.
Plenty of discussion early into the 2025 season has surrounded the New York Yankees and the new “torpedo” bat several of their players are using. The oddly designed bat is meant to centre more weight around the barrel of the wood.
It has been so far, so good for the Yankees, as they’ve scored an astonishing 36 runs through just three games into the season, 15 of which have come off home runs. Many others around the league are beginning to take notice, including some Blue Jays players.
Davis Schneider has already begun using it, stating, “It’s a big ass barrel. And I like big barrels.” Now, one of his teammates appears set to join him on the new trend.

As per Jonah Birenbaum of The Score, Blue Jays second baseman Will Wagner has also ordered some torpedo bats, though when he plans to use one in a game remains to be seen. It’s worth noting that Schneider also recently mentioned that Ernie Clement has considered giving it a shot.
The decision to switch bats for Schneider may have at least partially come due to his struggles at the plate in 2024. In 454 plate appearances, he hit just .191 with 13 home runs and 46 RBIs, numbers significantly worse than what was a breakout season in 2023.
As for Wagner, his numbers were far more impressive. Albeit in a small sample size, he suited up for 24 games after being acquired by the Blue Jays in a trade that saw Yusei Kikuchi head to the Houston Astros. In those 24 games, he hit .305 with 11 RBIs.
Whether these new bats lead to better production for Schneider and Wagner remains to be seen, but it’s certainly something for Blue Jays fans to monitor in the coming days and weeks.
