The Toronto Blue Jays aren’t done making moves despite the trade deadline creeping closer and closer.
Ross Atkins and his staff were able to pull off their second trade of the day and their third this week, bringing in catcher Brandon Valenzuela from the San Diego Padres. In exchange, they’re sending out infielder Will Wagner.
By sending Wagner out, the Blue Jays have freed up a spot on their 40-man roster, indicating that they may perhaps make another trade or possibly recall someone from the minors.
As for Valenzuela, the 24-year-old gives the Jays some much-needed catching depth in the minors. It’s also worth noting that Alejandro Kirk is currently on the 7-day IL with a concussion.
Valenzuela, who is a switch hitter, is batting .229 with 12 home runs and 46 RBI for Double-A San Antonio this season.
Wagner was one of three players — alongside Joey Loperfido and Jake Bloss — the Blue Jays picked up at last year’s trade deadline from the Houston Astros in exchange for Yusei Kikuchi. He impressed with the Blue Jays in 24 games last season, but had struggled through 40 outings in 2025, hitting just .237 with zero home runs and seven RBI.
Earlier in the day, the Jays were able to acquire former Cy Young-winning pitcher Shane Bieber from the Cleveland Guardians. That move came just days after they traded for relief pitcher Seranthony Dominguez from the Baltimore Orioles.
It remains to be seen whether Atkins has another trick up his sleeve before today’s trade deadline, which is scheduled for 6 p.m. ET.
