Toronto Blue Jays manager John Schneider informed reporters this afternoon that Buddy Kennedy has been designated for assignment.
The 26-year-old infielder joined the Blue Jays organization on a minor-league contract in early July after being designated for assignment by the Philadelphia Phillies in late June. He then had his contract purchased by the Jays on Aug. 5 and has been on the Major League roster since.
Kennedy, who happened to play high school baseball with Joey Loperfido and Davis Schneider, hit .200 with a strikeout and one walk in six plate appearances during his brief tenure with the Jays. He’s played 60 career MLB games to date, having also spent time with the Detroit Tigers and Arizona Diamondbacks.
The decision to DFA Kennedy comes as a result of Andres Giménez being activated from the injured list. The 26-year-old hasn’t suited up for the Jays since suffering a sprained ankle in early July, but was able to get in a rehab assignment with Triple-A Buffalo. The 2022 All-Star, who was acquired in a trade by the Jays last offseason, is hitting .218 with five home runs and 23 RBI on the year.
The Blue Jays are starting to get healthy, as Schneider also informed reporters that George Springer is hopeful to begin a rehab stint in the next few days, while Anthony Santander is hopeful to start swinging next week. In the meantime, the Jays will look to continue improving on their AL East-best 69-50 record to ensure they’re in a great position once fully healthy.
