Toronto Blue Jays lose catcher on waivers to Red Sox

Ali Sanchez’s time with the Toronto Blue Jays organization has officially come to an end.

The 28-year-old catcher, who appeared in eight games with the Blue Jays this season, was claimed off waivers this afternoon by the Boston Red Sox. In his eight games, he hit .238 with a .571 OPS over 21 plate appearances.

The Blue Jays signed Sanchez this offseason to a minor-league deal in order to shore up their catching depth. He was recalled in early June and then once again in late July following an injury to Alejandro Kirk, who has since been able to return, which prompted the Jays to DFA Sanchez.

Given that Sanchez is out of options, he will be added to the Red Sox’s major league roster. This move may have been made due to Carlos Narvaez being banged up recently, though he isn’t expected to miss much time.

Sanchez joins a Red Sox team that is red hot as of late, having won eight of their last 10 outings. They sit four games back of the Blue Jays for first in the AL East with a 64-52 record.
