The Toronto Blue Jays don’t appear to be done in their pursuit of adding free agents just yet.
While the Blue Jays’ offseason hasn’t gone the way fans had hoped, the organization has recently landed some key free agents in relief pitcher Jeff Hoffman and outfielder Anthony Santander.
General manager Ross Atkins and his staff have also been trying to land a starting pitcher. They had interest in some of the top arms available, including Corbin Burnes and Max Fried, but were unable to land any. Now, they have their eye on another target.
MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand is reporting that the Blue Jays have a strong interest in signing Max Scherzer.
“A number of teams have been loosely connected to Scherzer this winter, though the Blue Jays appear to be the most serious about signing him, sources said,” Feinsand wrote in an article on Tuesday, while also mentioning that one source referred to the Blue Jays as the “frontrunner” to land him.
Scherzer, a future Hall of Famer, has appeared in eight All-Star Games during his illustrious career. He is also a three-time Cy Young winner, having won the prestigious award in 2013, 2016, and 2017.
While he has a very decorated resume, there are injury concerns. The 40-year-old pitched just 43.1 innings with the Texas Rangers this past season. He missed some time with arm fatigue and nerve issues and wound up being shut down in September due to a hamstring ailment.
To Scherzer’s credit, he was still impactful when on the mound, posting a 3.95 ERA with 40 strikeouts. The season prior, he had a 3.77 ERA in 27 starts split between the Rangers and New York Mets.
On top of pursuing Scherzer, the Blue Jays are also continuing to be linked to first baseman Pete Alonso and third baseman Alex Bregman.
