Toronto Blue Jays cut ties with pitcher Easton Lucas

The Toronto Blue Jays are moving on from 29-year-old pitcher Easton Lucas.

The Blue Jays announced on Tuesday afternoon that Lucas has been placed on unconditional waivers. The move will create an open spot on the Jays’ 40-man roster.

Lucas has been a member of the Jays organization since being claimed off waivers from the Detroit Tigers late in the 2024 season. He went on to pitch 4.2 innings for the Jays after the claim to close out the season, giving up six earned runs.

The left-throwing reliever was unable to earn a spot on the Jays roster out of camp to begin the 2025 season, but was recalled in April. He wound up making five starts for the Blue Jays, where he put up a 6.66 ERA and a 3-3 record through 24.1 innings.

Though things got away from him, Lucas was very impressive for a short time with the Jays this past season. He dazzled through his first two starts, as he was able to get through them without allowing a single run. However, he then allowed 14 runs over the following two outings, and wound up only appearing in two more games afterward.

This marked the first season in which Lucas had seen starts at the MLB level. It appeared as though the Jays were trying to transition him back into a starting role, as he also made 13 starts in Triple-A Buffalo. He was reasonably productive over that span, posting a respectable 3.78 ERA.

Given where the Blue Jays are as an organization, specifically in regard to their starting pitching rotation, seeing them move on from Lucas doesn’t come as a major surprise. That said, they are looking to improve their bullpen, which is why they are continuously being linked to the best closer on the free-agent market in Edwin Diaz.
