Toronto Blue Jays catcher Tyler Heineman is a man of many talents.
The 34-year-old, who is having a phenomenal season in a backup role behind Alejandro Kirk, recently joined the 6ix Inning Stretch podcast hosted by former Blue Jay Whit Merrifield and broadcaster Lindsay Dunn.
Heineman did plenty of reflecting on the long journey heās taken to become a regular in the MLB, having battled it out in the minor leagues for several years prior to this season. The entire show was an intriguing listen, though one particularly interesting moment came near the end, when it was revealed that on top of being a big-league catcher, Heineman is also a very good magician.
āSince I have two kids now, I havenāt practiced as much because I feel like I have to give them attention when Iām not at the baseball field,ā Heineman explained. āI regurgitate some old tricks and show some things every once in a while to guys when they want it, on flights and anything like that.ā
“It takes a lot of time. Iām trying to make sure my time is managed correctly. I think itās something Iāll get back into as I get a little bit more comfortable with navigating the daily lifestyle.ā

Heineman mentioned that, with the Blue Jays being in the position they are in this late in the season, he wants to focus solely on baseball at this point. That approach seems to be working, as he’s hitting an impressive .336 with a .909 OPS through 130 plate appearances. The stats show he’s been very valuable on the field, and this little tidbit from the 6ix Inning StretchĀ indicates that he can help keep the clubhouse light when needed as well.
