Toronto Blue Jays trade pitcher straight up for cash

The Toronto Blue Jays completed a trade with a divisional rival today, but it isn’t likely to turn into a blockbuster deal.

That being said, knowing the Tampa Bay Rays’ long history of developing pitchers, the team’s latest move could eventually end up being one of the biggest regrets in franchise history.

On Thursday afternoon, the Blue Jays announced that they’d traded left-handed relief pitcher Brandon Eisert to the Rays in exchange for cash considerations. It was not disclosed how much the sum of money ended up being.

Eisert, a 27-year-old from Portland, Oregon, spent the last six years in Toronto’s organization after they selected him in the 2019 MLB Amateur draft. He played just three games for the team at the MLB level, making his debut with the team last season, where he put up a 4.05 ERA and 1.350 WHIP, striking out two batters and walking four in 6.2 innings.

Given that Toronto’s had a long time to look at Eisert, they seemingly felt that it was time to part ways.

He had been designated for assignment earlier in the week to make space on the team’s 40-man roster for new big-ticket signing Anthony Santander.

The two American League rivals meet next on May 13, when Tampa Bay travels up to Toronto for a three-game set at the Rogers Centre.
