Despite some recent shots thrown back and forth, Toronto Blue Jays broadcaster Buck Martinez has no issue with Aaron Boone.
Boone, the New York Yankees manager, took exception to some comments made by Martinez last month. While calling a game, the long-time Blue Jays announcer said the Yankees were not “a very good team.”
The comments caused quite a bit of backlash and were clearly heard by the Yankees. Prior to his team facing the Jays in the ALDS, Boone was quick to denounce Martinez’s assessment.
“Contrary to some thoughts up here, we’re a really good team,” Boone told reporters last week. “I know Buck had some thoughts. That’s all I was responding to. He’s wrong. But it doesn’t matter. We’ve got to go play, and we’ve got to go perform.”
While Boone may not have agreed with Martinez’s comments, the latter cleared up any potential drama between the two, sharing a funny interaction they had prior to the ALDS getting underway last week.
“I met with [Boone] before Game 1 in Toronto, went into his office. We were having a little media scrum. He looked at me and said, ‘There’s the guy that doesn’t like my team.’ And he said, ‘I don’t like your hair, either, so now we’re even,'” Martinez said with a laugh.
Martinez’s original assessment seems to be ringing true so far, as the Jays hold a 2-0 series lead over the Yankees while outscoring them 23-8. When speaking about them this time, however, he had a much different take.
“Honestly, lately they’ve been playing much better defence. … They’ve tightened it up.”

Despite finishing with an identical 94-68 record during the regular season, the Blue Jays have been far and away the better team through the opening two games of this series. Thanks to the impressive start, they have an opportunity to eliminate the Yankees from the postseason on Tuesday evening.
