Toronto Blue Jays share bad-news injury updates on three pitchers

Despite their great play as of late, the Toronto Blue Jays are an extremely banged-up bunch right now.

The Blue Jays, who are back in action today following the All-Star break, gave injury updates on several players, and they aren’t what fans were hoping to hear.

In part of a lengthy update on X, Sportsnet’s Shi Davidi reported that Yimi Garcia, who last pitched in early July due to a sprained ankle, experienced ulnar nerve symptoms in his right elbow recently. In order to get a better idea of what the issue may be, he has been temporarily shut down. The 34-year-old reliever was having a solid season with a 3.86 ERA through 21 innings.

Meanwhile, Bowden Francis suffered another setback. The 29-year-old suffered a shoulder injury in mid-June, and it was a “bit cranky” today, according to manager John Schneider. As a result, he has been shut down for the next 10 days.

Last but not least from a pitching standpoint, Ryan Burr is set to undergo season-ending shoulder surgery. The 31-year-old suffered the injury less than two weeks ago and was immediately placed on the 60-day IL as a result.

Those were far from the only injury updates, either.

Anthony Santander will be arriving in Toronto on Saturday to meet with doctors to see what his next steps are as he continues to progress from a shoulder injury suffered in late May. Meanwhile, Daulton Varsho is set to play 3-5 innings for single-A Dundedin tonight, with the goal being for him to get to Triple-A Buffalo next week.

Andres Gimenez is in Toronto working on defensive drills from his knees as he continues to recover from an ankle injury suffered earlier this month.

The final updates belonged to Nick Sandling, who is playing catch and beginning to feel better, while Alek Manoah, who was rocked in his first rehab start last week, will make his second start in Dunedin on Sunday.
