Toronto could let bars start serving alcohol at 9am for an entire month

May 23 2018, 7:58 pm

FIFA World Cup Championships take place in Russia this June and while the time difference means most matches will air in the morning, Torontonians might be able to celebrate along with the rest of the world if a motion before City Council passes.

The motion on the docket at today’s meeting comes recommended by Councillor Cesar Palacio and seconded by Councillor Frank Di Giorgio. It asks that “City Council authorize the extension of alcohol sales and service hours in the City of Toronto to begin at 9 am between June 14 and July 15, 2018 to allow the public and local cafes and restaurants to enjoy and benefit from the FIFA World Cup Championship (World Cup 2018).”

If passed, Torontonians could enjoy an entire summer month of early morning beers, The extended hours for alcohol sales and service during the quadrennial international football tournament are being billed as a benefit to community building and aims to “provide a venue for Torontonians and an outlet for businesses to show their support as well.”
