Often referred to by its code name of “Ruby Road,” The Handmaid’s Tale is currently filming for its fifth season in Toronto right now and there is tons of chances to catch a glimpse of all the action happening!

The series has been on location in the GTA since February and production is expected to continue until the end of July.

Filming for the hit series started in Toronto back in 2016 and year after year the series returns to the city to ramp up production again. Based on the bestselling novel by Margaret Atwood, The Handmaid’s Tale has quickly become a fan favourite and stars Elisabeth Moss, Alexis Bedel, Joseph Fiennes, Bradley Whitford, and Yvonne Strahovski among others.

In fact, Atwood is closely involved with the series and is even one of the producers, giving her own feedback and opinions on the show while working closely with the cast and crew in Toronto.

Unfortunately, fans were pretty upset to hear that lead Alexis Bedel, who played Emily, wouldn’t be returning for another season. Bedel exited the show at the end of season four and it was announced this past May that she would not be returning for the show’s fifth season.

Filming for The Handmaid’s Tale has taken place across the GTA from Cambridge, to Newmarket, to the streets of downtown Toronto of course. Recently Yvonne Strahovski was spotted mid-traffic with a baby in hand — leaving some fans with a lot of questions!

Elisabeth Moss was also spotted in the city this past week running down Queen Street West and locals caught a glimpse of all the action as it took place, so make sure you keep your eyes peeled around town for the next couple weeks — you just never know when you might see a Handmaid appear!

At the beginning of June, filming was also spotted in the Parkdale neighbourhood outside of a Home Hardware store, and evidently caused quite the traffic jam according to a few locals. Of course, everyone had to stop and catch a sneak peak of the cast and crew hard at work.

Production has also been seen for a second time now in downtown Newmarket from June 12-16. Locations like the Old Town Hall, Market Square and Main Street were used for shooting multiple scenes.

Back in May, filming for the fifth season took place in Cambridge as well. Filming happened for multiple days from May 16-24 in areas like Galt, known as Cambridge’s downtown core, and Hespeler Village. The show has also previously shot at these locations in prior seasons, so you just never know when you might see the ladies in red appear!

It was announced that the new season will premiere on September 14 on Hulu. The first two episodes to premiere will be directed by none other than Elisabeth Moss herself, and it’s obvious that fans cannot wait to see what season five will have in store!
