Toronto will be home to an epic, weekend-long celebration of Thai food, culture, and art in the heart of the city this month.

Food festival season (more commonly known as summer) may be drawing to a close, but there are still a few in the works that you can, and should, get excited for.

This summer, we’ve seen celebrations of Canadian wine, local tacos, and Caribbean street food, to name only a few, but later this month, it’s Thai cuisine’s turn to shine.

Back for its eighth year, Thai Festival YYZ is taking over the heart of downtown Toronto for an entire weekend that puts Thailand’s cuisine and culture in the spotlight.

Taking place at Sankofa Square on Saturday, Sept. 20 and Sunday, Sept. 21, the festival will encompass every element of Thai culture under the sun.

There’ll be live music and performances on the main stage, Muay Thai demonstrations, traditional Thai dance, and, most importantly, plenty of food.

All manner of Thai street food staples and traditional eats will be accounted for, from quick snacks to full-on feasts.

Toronto favourites Wang Lang, Pai, Thai Mart and Tha Phae Tavern, as well as famous Thailand tea brand Cha Tra Mue, which just opened its first Canadian location in Toronto, so you know it’s going to be good.

On top of that, vendors offering snacks like bao, Thai buns, kanom krok (Thai coconut pancakes), barbecue, Thai-style omelettes, and much, much more will all make appearances at the festival, so you can rest assured you’ll be walking away well-fed.

Over 6,000 people are expected to pass through the festival over the weekend, making it one of Toronto’s largest Thai cultural celebrations and, based on the lineup of food vendors alone, one of its best, too.

The big bonus? It’s completely free to attend. Just show up and start celebrating Thai culture. Don’t mind if we do!
