I visited Subway’s test kitchen to taste the new SubDog and it was just as delicious as it looks

A long-debated topic has finally been settled, and it’s absolutely delicious. Is a hot dog a sandwich? The answer is yes, and Subway Canada is here to prove it.

As the Sandwich Authority here in Canada — with nearly 3,000 restaurants to back it up — Subway Canada has made things official with the launch of the brand new SubDog.

Lucky for me, I got the exclusive invitation to visit the Subway Canada test kitchen in Toronto to try out this heavenly creation, and let’s just say it was a home run!

My first SubDog

The backyard classic redone the Subway Canada way? Sign me up! That was my immediate reaction upon receiving my invitation. Arriving just in time for lunch, my appetite was fully charged, and my excitement was off the charts.

I met with Chef John Botelho, Subway Canada’s Culinary Manager, who quickly gave me the rundown on the brand’s newest creation. It started with the simple question: “How do we make hot dogs the Subway way?”

The answer, as Chef John explained, is actually pretty simple. You start with the same quality ingredients you find at every Subway Canada restaurant. For the SubDog, that looks like a jumbo all-beef Schneiders hot dog (that’s nearly half a pound of beef), fresh-baked bread prepared daily in-restaurant, and all the toppings and sauce you can dream of.

It’s just like how you’d order your Subway sandwich, except your meat is a hot dog! Choose your bread, pick your toppings, drizzle your sauce, and even toast your SubDog if you like.

For my version, I got the extra special opportunity to go behind the counter and whip it up myself. I started with my favourite bread — Italian Herb & Cheese, and loaded it up with delicious cheddar cheese slices.

I popped that baby into the toaster for some melt-y cheese, and then came the Schneiders hot dog nestled on top. From there, and with Chef John’s inspiration, I opted for a Japanese-inspired version.

That looked like crispy cucumbers, shredded lettuce, and tons of freshly sliced red onions. For some extra flavours, I add a couple of tomato slices and let that iconic Sweet Onion Teriyaki Sauce rain on top.

Lastly, for some texture, I added a heaping serving of crunchy onions, et voila! You have a SubDog, the Sabrina way!

Come get your sandwich

As expected, my SubDog was absolutely delicious! That quality hot dog with classic Subway ingredients is a combo you can’t deny is tasty and filling. And with a bag of Subway Canada’s Italian Herb and Cheese Lay’s chips — it was a lunch worth remembering.

Now it’s your turn! The SubDog is available at participating locations across the nation for a limited time starting June 29.

Dress it up how you like, and remember, this isn’t just a hot dog anymore; it’s a Subway Canada sandwich!
