Second coronavirus-related death confirmed in Ontario

Halton Region Public Health has confirmed the second COVID-19 related death in Ontario.

The individual, was a man in his 50s and had an underlying health condition.

He was treated at Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital and Milton District Hospital.

“This is the tragic proof that we need to work together as a community to help stop the spread of COVID-19 by practicing social distancing and taking action to protect yourself and those around you,” Dr. Hamidah Meghani, Halton Region’s Medical Officer of Health said in a statement. “This is a larger community issue and I know that everyone joins me in extending their deepest condolences to his family at this time.”

The Public Health agency stressed that all prevention and control policies and procedures were followed during this patient’s stay.

Minister of Health, Christine Elliot, would not confirm the case during Ontario’s press conference on Thursday afternoon.

The news comes after Quebec health officials announced the province’s first coronavirus-related death on Wednesday.

There have now been 10 COVID-19-related deaths in Canada.

Earlier on Thursday, Ontario reported 43 new confirmed cases of coronavirus in the province, marking the largest one-day jump since the outbreak.
