A 24-year-old man is dead after a wheel flew off a trailer and crashed into his car on Highway 401 in Scarborough on Wednesday, according to OPP.

The incident occurred in the early hours of August 12, on the eastbound express lanes, in the area of McCowan Road and Markham Road from a trailer on the westbound lane.

According to acting OPP Sgt. Dan Hunter, a wheel from a trailer being towed from a pickup truck, detached itself and crossed over into oncoming traffic where it struck the victim’s vehicle. The driver died due to injuries sustained in the collision.

“Our officers have located the pickup truck and are speaking to the driver at the time,” said Hunter.

The eastbound lanes will remain closed for the morning and westbound lane is restricted.

The OPP is asking anyone with information or dashcam footage to contact Toronto OPP at 416-235-4981.
