The Toronto Blue Jays might not be totally finished with setting up their roster for the 2025 season, but they’ve clearly moved closer to the finish line than the start.
After inking a major deal for Anthony Santander on Monday, the Blue Jays have now added two pieces this offseason to improve their lineup, following a trade last month with Cleveland for infielder Andres Gimenez.
Though they struck out on the extreme upper echelon of talents like Juan Soto and Roki Sasaki, Santander should still be a key piece of the franchise moving forward, given his five-year contract and past resume.
Predicting what exactly Toronto will look like a little over two months from now isn’t the easiest exercise, but here’s a stab at a projected Opening Day lineup when they take on the Baltimore Orioles on March 27.
- George Springer, RF
- Bo Bichette, SS
- Vladimir Guerrero Jr., 1B
- Anthony Santander, DH
- Alejandro Kirk, C
- Andres Gimenez, 2B
- Ernie Clement, 3B
- Davis Schneider, LF
- Nathan Lukes, CF
When we did this exercise following the Gimenez deal, Will Wagner slotted in the designated hitter spot. Santander may end up playing more in the field — just 25 of his 155 games were as a designated hitter with Baltimore last season — but perhaps he’ll get eased into his new role before getting a full defensive assignment this year.
There is, of course, also a major player missing, with outfielder Daulton Varsho currently expected to possibly miss the start of the season with a rotator cuff injury, though it’s too early to make any major declarations there. Should Varsho be healthy, he’d likely slot in the order for one of Schneider or Lukes and end up back in centre field.
In any case, it’s just a few short months before we can stop prognosticating about projected lineups and start arguing about the real thing.
