Ontario schools report almost 3,000 COVID-19 cases since September

The Government of Ontario is reporting 79 more COVID-19 cases in schools in Monday’s update, totalling 2,707 reported cases since September.

According to the provincial government, 39 of the new cases are student-related, 13 are staff-related, and 27 are unidentified,

There has been a reported 906 school-related cases in just two weeks, with 1,801 cases reported 14 or more days before that.

The numbers are announced daily at 10:30 am on the province’s school and childcare centre coronavirus-tracking website.

Out of the 2,707 cases reported since September, about 56% of cases have been reported from students.

The province continues to report one school closure out of the 565 schools currently reporting cases.

As for licensed childcare centres, there are now 506 total confirmed cases, as well as 103 centres and 425 homes closed.

On Monday morning, the province confirmed 1,242 new cases, which is lower than the record high on Sunday.

Over the weekend, 1,132 cases were reported on Saturday, and 1,328 on Sunday — breaking single-day records in a row.

Cases have been high recently, with Friday’s 1,003Thursday’s 998Wednesday’s 987Tuesday’s 1,050Monday’s 948, and last Saturday’s 1,015.
