Ontario schools report over 1,000 COVID-19 cases in two weeks

The Government of Ontario is reporting 103 more COVID-19 cases in schools in Thursday’s update, reaching a new high of daily cases.

According to the provincial government, 51 of the new cases are student-related, 14 are staff-related, and 38 are unidentified, adding to the new total of 3,166 reported cases since September.

There has been a reported 1,046 school-related cases in just two weeks, with 2,120 cases reported 14 or more days before that.

The numbers are announced daily at 10:30 am on the province’s school and childcare centre coronavirus-tracking website.

Out of the 3,166 cases recorded since September, about 57% of cases have been reported from students.

The province also confirms one school closure out of the 653 schools currently reporting cases.

As for licensed childcare centres, there are now 557 total confirmed cases, as well as 107 centres and 428 homes closed.

On Thursday morning, the province confirmed 1,575 new COVID-19 cases, breaking a record-high for the third day in a row.

The province broke its previous single-day record-high on Wednesday with 1,426.
