Ontario cities dominate list of best communities in Canada to raise families

Those considering where to raise a family may want to relocate to Ontario.

According to Maclean’s list of the best Canadian communities to raise families, Ontario dominated the list.

Of the top 10 cities on the list of 100, seven are located here in Ontario while three others were in Quebec.

According to the ranking, Ontario’s Burlington topped the list thanks to its great schools, well-paying jobs, and strong sense of community, making it the most ideal place to raise a family in Canada.

To reach these numbers, the magazine gathered data on 415 communities across the country and compared their wealth, economy, affordability, population growth, demographics, commute times, crime, weather, access to health care, amenities, and culture and community to find the best spot in the country.

To determine the best communities to raise a family, additional data was included, including the percentage of the population under the age of 15 and the percentage of families with children, awarding more points to cities with lots of kids.

Also included were the costs and availability of childcare as well as access to higher education.

  3. Oakville, ON
  4. Blainville, QC
  5. Milton, ON
  6. Russell, ON
  7. Vaudreuil-Dorion, QC
  8. Deux-Montagnes, QC
  9. Aurora, ON
  10. Ottawa, ON

The best communities in Canada to raise families by region:

  • Atlantic Canada:  Rothesay, NB (no. 67)
  • Quebec: Blainville (no. 4)
  • Ontario: Burlington (no. 1)
  • Prairies: Hanover, Man. (no. 73)
  • Alberta: St. Albert (no. 13)
  • BC: Oak Bay (no. 43)
