On-duty Durham police special constable charged with assault

An on-duty Durham Regional Police Service special constable has been charged with assaulting a prisoner.

According to law enforcement, Chris Silverthorn, 47, a member of the Court Services Branch, has been charged with the assault.

The charge follows an investigation into the case by DRPS’ Professional Standards Unit (PSU). The investigation began in March when an allegation by a teenaged male regarding the conduct of an on-duty Special Constable was brought forward.

Silverthorn, a Special Constable with DRPS since 2005, was released on a Promise to Appear before an officer in charge.
