How much money Nick Robertson is asking for from the Toronto Maple Leafs

The Toronto Maple Leafs and Nick Robertson are just a few days away from ending their contract stalemate.

Robertson, a 23-year-old free agent who is currently a restricted free agent, is set to have an arbitration hearing with the Leafs set for Sunday.

According to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman, Robertson has set his ask at a price of US$2.25 million, while the team is coming in at an offer of US$1.2 million.

Per NHL rules, the independent arbitrator will pick either option, which would come out to a one-year or a two-year deal.

Toronto and Robertson could still settle before Sunday, but given how long the dispute has gone on, it’s looking increasingly unlikely by the hour.

How has Robertson’s time with the Leafs been?

Robertson has had an up-and-down tenure since being drafted by the Leafs in 2019 in the second round. Long seen as a homegrown talent who might one day find a home in the top-six of the forward group, it hasn’t quite worked out that way. He had initially even requested a trade heading into last season, though he eventually seemed content with sticking in Toronto.

Robertson finished last season with 15 goals in 69 games, a career-high. But he was passed over for much of the team’s playoff run, suiting up in just three postseason contests.

“I give Robbie a lot of credit. He had stretches,” Leafs general manager Brad Treliving said in an end-of-season press conference. “He can shoot the puck. His challenge is becoming a regular. You can always debate whether it is ‘opportunity, and then it comes,’ or ‘do it more regularly, and you get more opportunity.'”
