Famous Taiwanese dessert chain opens first North American location in Toronto

A famous Taiwanese dessert restaurant that specializes in a singular dish has landed in Toronto, marking its first North American location.
Fans of Taiwan-style wheel cakes, rejoice: one of the country’s most popular chains specializing in the dessert just opened its first-ever location in North America, and it’s right here in Toronto.
Wheel cakes, also known as wheel pies, are a wildly popular Taiwanese dessert that has been gaining notoriety around the world thanks to their distinct appearance and versatility when it comes to flavoured fillings.
There are hundreds of vendors out there who serve them, but if you ask the most tried-and-true wheel cake fans, they’ll tell you that Taiwan’s Misterwheel is among the best. Now, Toronto residents have the chance to judge that for themselves.
If this is the first time you’ve ever heard of wheel cakes, here’s what you need to know: the cakes are made from a batter, similar to pancake batter, cooked inside individual round pans, and filled with a variety of different sweet and savoury fillings.
It’s somewhat similar to Japanese Taiyaki, minus the fun fish shape, but wheel cakes do, frequently, have their own unique design elements to up their curb appeal.
Misterwheel, for example, uses a selection of different hot irons to “stamp” their cakes with messages or images. You can even hire them to cater an event and mark the cakes with custom designs or logos.
Inside, they, too, offer several different fillings, from more dessert-forward options like matcha with mochi and Earl Grey milk tea, to savoury options including lobster salad and bacon with mashed potato.
In other words, you can have a wheel cake for lunch with a wheel cake for dessert. We think that’s beautiful.

The chain’s Toronto location officially opened for business on Aug. 16, handing out cakes stamped with a cutesy Canada-themed design, and has been drawing steady crowds ever since.
The verdict so far? Wheelcakes are here to stay in Toronto. That, and Earl Grey and Matcha Mochi are, seemingly, the best flavours, but why don’t you swing by and see for yourself?
